MIG/Flux Core Welder by Miller Electric Review

This flux-cored/ MIG welding machine by Miller Electric is a heavy-duty, full-sized model that can provide the type of power and versatility that makes this model a better choice for pro-use. However, the hobbyist can also rely on this machine to handle small and major welding jobs around the home. Offered at a reasonable price and loaded with some great extra features that add to the machine’s versatile and solid performance, it comes as no surprise that this model received plenty of positive feedback from the pros.

Read on to learn more about this popular Miller Electric Model.

Overview and Features

Miller Electric’s welding machines are more commonly marketed toward the professional, however, if your job requires you to transport your welding unit from site to site, transporting this model can be somewhat of a hassle considering its larger size.

Loaded with some nice extras, this welder can handle both MIG and flux-cored welding, making it a great choice for beginners. If you know how to weld thin metal and need a versatile welding machine that can handle thinner and thicker welds, this machine can deliver.

MIG/Flux Core Welder by Miller Electric: Quick Verdict

(4.5/5)

If you need a top of the line, pro-quality welding machine that can weld anything you throw at it, this ME model is right up your alley.

The price is right for many pros looking for a versatile welding machine that can handle both flux-cored and MIG welding processes.

However, if you’re looking for a highly portable welding machine this model is not the best choice. As a full-sized welding machine, this model will be difficult to transport and haul from job site to job site. We would recommend this machine to DIYers and pros in need of a full-sized machine that’s versatile and easy to use.

Operation

This model comes with the popular auto-set feature that allows the user to set the weld via programmed parameters, another feature that makes this model very beginner-friendly.

Of course, it also comes with the traditional manual mode, so you’ll have the  type of flexibility you need when performing a wide range of weld types.

Quick Select Drive

This feature offers three groove options for a faster set up process that can save you a lot of time on the job.

Welding Processes

This machine can handle both flux-cored and MIG welding processes, both of which feature different characteristics that a welder will need to consider before determining which type of process to use for a specific welding application. For the best results, you must consider the proper shielding gas, the material, voltage settings, wire feed speed, weld appearance, and the location of the job site.

Unfortunately, there’s no universal welding process that can handle it all,  so the above factors will affect the user’s decision regarding which process to use each time.

The MIG power option utilizes a continuous wire electrode and requires a shielding gas during use. The mild steel wires used are commonly plated with copper. This will aid in conductivity while preventing oxidation. The shielding gas will protect the molten puddle of metal from contaminants and debris. With this machine, pros recommend using a shielding gas that consists of twenty-five percent carbon dioxide and seventy-five percent argon. When working outdoors and using solid wire, you should be careful regarding wind conditions. The wind can easily blow away the shielding gas, so you’ll be without any type of protection. In this case, a windshield will be needed.

Using Flux-Cored

There are actually a couple of types of flux-cored wires: self and gas-shielded. The gas-shielded wires will need an external gas, however, the slag is very easy to remove. You should consider using this type of wire when you’re working with thicker metals. The gas-shielded wires feature a flux coating that will quickly solidify much faster than the molten material. This helps to create a shelf that will contain the pool when you’re welding vertically up. The self-shielding wire will not require shielding gas because the pool will be protected by the gas that’s generated when the flux is burned from the wire. Using the self-shielding wire makes it easier to use this machine outdoors and generally boosts its portability since you won’t have to haul around a large tank.

Portability

This is a full-sized welding machine, so it’s not as portable as models such as the ViperMIG welding machine by RazorWeld, however, it’s much more versatile. The Razorweld is only able to handle the MIG process, while this machine can easily handle flux-cored and MIG. If you mainly use MIG for most processes, then a dedicated MIG machine is a better choice since those models are usually priced more affordable.

Conclusion and Rating

MIG/Flux Core Welder by Miller Electric

Product Rating: (4.5/5)

This full-sized welding machine by Miller Electric obviously wasn’t designed for the welder who makes emergency welds on site. Instead, this model would be a better fit for a permanent setup. However, in terms of flexibility and ease of use, this machine truly shines.

This flux-cored and MIG welding machine can offer the type of versatility you need on the job, however, it’s larger size means hauling it to a job site can be difficult compared to lightweight models. It does offer a solid performance and comes with some features that are clearly designed with the beginner welder in mind. Dependable, durable, and versatile, we gave this welding machine a rating of four and a half stars out of five stars.
